Assessment before a session

Discuss the goal and precautions first

Tell your clinician what has changed

You do not have to choose a massage technique yourself. Tell your clinician where you hurt and what has changed since the collision.

Know what a session involves

Massage involves hands-on work with muscles and other soft tissues. A session chosen for relaxation and one planned around a medical concern may use overlapping techniques. The useful distinction is the goal, the precautions, and how the treatment will be reviewed.

Agree on what to track

If massage is included, agree on what to track. Tell your care team about changes in pain and daily tasks, such as dressing or turning your head. Ask how those changes will inform the next treatment decision.

A little clarity before your first call

Questions before you begin

How soon after a car accident can I get a massage?
Start with a medical assessment before arranging massage. Ask your clinician whether it is appropriate for your injury, which areas need precautions, and when to begin. Do not use massage to delay evaluation of pain or other symptoms after a collision.
Should I tolerate painful pressure during massage?
No. Tell the therapist if the pressure hurts and ask for it to be reduced or stopped. Massage should not cause severe pain. Discuss uncomfortable positions and any areas that need precautions before the session starts.
