Agree on goals after your assessment

Your first physical therapy visit includes a discussion of symptoms and an examination of movement. Depending on your needs, the therapist may check strength, flexibility, balance, and everyday movements such as standing from a chair. You then agree on goals and a treatment plan.

Practice the parts chosen for you

Ask what each exercise is for. A useful answer connects it to your goal, such as reaching a shelf or tolerating a work task. Ask how the therapist will decide when to change it.

Use reviews to guide changes

Your plan needs a review point, not a promised finish date. The number and spacing of appointments depend on your condition and needs. At a review, describe what daily tasks remain difficult and how symptoms have changed.

A little clarity before your first call

Questions before you begin

Does physical therapy hurt?
Some discomfort can occur with prescribed neck exercises for whiplash, but exercises should not cause severe pain. Tell your therapist what you feel during and after an exercise. Ask which symptoms mean you should stop and contact them before trying it again.
